Headlands is pleased to present The Quieting World, an immersive soundscape installation by artist Joshua-Michéle Ross captures the dawn chorus from two distinct American ecosystems. Presented in partnership with Pasaquan (Buena Vista, GA) and Ruth Foundation for the Arts, this cross-disciplinary project weaves together sound art, poetry, vocal ensemble, and performance art to explore humanity’s primordial connection to dawn.

Visit the installation and exhibition from March 2 to March 30, and join us on March 23 from 3–6PM for performative activations of the installation by Pulitzer-prize winning poet Forrest Gander, Oakland-based women’s vocal ensemble Kitka, and Performance Artist Travis Dodd. About The Quieting World

On September 22nd, 2024 sound artist Joshua-Michele Ross recorded the dawn chorus at 8 locations surrounding the art environment of Pasaquan in Georgia and 8 locations across the Headlands Center for the Arts in California. The recordings represent two distinct ecosystems captured on the autumnal equinox; a moment of balance between light and darkness. Hope and despair. Renewal and disappearance. The project debuts at Headlands Center for the Arts (March 2025) before traveling to Pasaquan (April – July 2025).

About Pasaquan

Deep in the pines of rural Marion County, roughly 40 miles southeast of Columbus, Georgia, lies the 7-acre “Mock-Precolumbian Psychedelic Wonderland,” Pasaquan. A place like no other, this art environment features a thousand feet of elaborately decorated winding cement walls, pagodas, a kiva, and vibrantly colored totem poles. Today, Columbus State University serves as the site’s steward, preserving St. EOM’s visionary environment while fostering new artistic creation through diverse programming and a Resident Artist Program.
