Artist Statement
I am an arts writer, curator, and historian committed to preserving and contextualizing the contributions of women and under-recognized artists in the Bay Area and California. I have collaborated with artists and arts professionals to document and contextualize their practices, and my writing has appeared in numerous exhibition catalogs, books, and publications, ranging from Artweek to Art in America. Through in-depth interviews, research, and curation, I record evolving conversations in contemporary art, and strive to place artists’ work within historical and cultural contexts while advocating for their legacies.
Much of my work centers on gathering, documenting, and interpreting artists’ voices and materials. My oral history project, “From the Studio,” engages artists in their creative spaces, exploring the intersection of process, environment, and creative intent. Whether through writing, exhibitions, or public programs, my work intends to sustain and share the histories that shape artistic practice today.
While at Headlands
During my Headlands residency I will bring to fruition “From the Studio,” a project that is the culmination of 30 years of working with artists, writing about their work, and sharing it with the public. This major oral history project, based on in-depth conversations with artists in their studios, explores their creative process.
I plan to use this time to dive into my archive of interviews from the 1980s to the present; to plan, conduct, and edit new ones; and to develop a platform for public access.
Being embedded in the Headlands community—where I was an Affiliate Artist during the 1990s—offers a rare opportunity to work in an environment that fosters creative exchange. It will allow me to experiment with modes of presentation while providing the ineffable inspiration of being part of a vibrant community of creative individuals.
