Artist Statement
I like it when my work has lots of parts, like a day of experiences with different energies, lyrical, abrasive, adding up to something complex but without closing in on any particular meaning. I placed the parts of my 2015 show at The Box LA Gallery so that together they would be experienced as a cohesive whole. There were videos of News Animation performances, a sculpture made of pieces of steel under tension, even a small painting of a sink. In one video I wrestle with a big pile of newspapers at Zuma Beach, with the surf soaking the paper and me and sea weeds all wrestling together. The show was called On an Iron Post, a title chosen at random from a book of poetry by William Carlos Williams.
While At Headlands
While at Headlands I will take in the natural beauty, converse with other artists, and let emerge some ideas for a new creative chapter in my life. I am 82 years old and spend a lot of my energy seeing to it that my work from over the year continues to offer nourishment, by teaching my early pieces, writing about them, being interviewed, and generally archiving my past work. At Headlands I will embrace the present and give myself breathing space to let inspiration emerge.
