Artist Statement

My art utilizes mediums including photography, installation, video, and performance to portray issues related to conservation, climate change, consumption, and waste. Though my work is largely image-based, I follow the traditions of land artists like Richard Long and Ana Mendieta, creating temporary and non-intrusive interventions into the landscape both in front of and behind the camera. Part of my practice involves surveying the landscape through the process of walking, my camera and monopod functioning as extensions of my body. Ultimately, I build sets in dialogue with the landscape, using my own body as an interlocutor and a prop in creating images. I aim to represent the relationship between land and humankind, using my personal interactions as a synecdoche for the widening gulf with nature.

While at Headlands

I will be continuing to develop a body of work in which I am creating site-specific performative photographs in collaboration with the landscape. While at Headlands, I will be using the surrounding environments within the Marin Headlands as my protagonist and backdrop. To create these works, I am photographing micro sections of the landscape, printing them onto fabric, and then sewing them into outfits and drapery. I then use my body, while covered in these prints, in conversation with the landscape to form simple, targeted, visual interventions. Each piece, staged in an ecologically sensitive area, uses this combination of photography and costuming to reveal the risks as well as highlight the hidden elements within it. Concurrently, I will be developing a performance series, and a collection of photo-base papier-mâché sculptures.
