Artist Statement
I am an artist filmmaker with strong interest in cultures of music, politics, and sound. I have made film profiles of several avant-garde composers and the cultural contexts in which they worked (e.g. Cornelius Cardew, Christian Wolff, Martin Bartlett). I have also made more oblique installation works which explore film and field recording, with a particular interest in image/sound relationships and how we may perceive a soundscape in social, environmental, and political ways. I have also a strong interest in the history of music technology—I am currently making a film about the first Soviet synthesizer, the ANS, and would be equally interested in finding out more about the history of San Francisco’s “people’s synthesizer,” the Serge Modular, with which I have extensive personal experience.
While at Headlands
While at Headlands I will be researching a new film and/or sound works. I have long been a fan of the experimental music and film scenes of the 70’s/80’s Bay Area and during my time I will have the unique opportunity to live and work in closer proximity to these influences. I hope this experience will foster a deeper understanding of those cultural milieu and help me consider what relevance they could be to where I’m at in my current practice.
