Artist Statement

Futurefarmers is a group of practitioners aligned through an interest in making work that that facilitates encounter, exchange and tactile forms of inquiry by calling into question the “certainties” of a given time or place where a work is situated. We are artist’s, architects, farmers, scientists and writers who come together in various working groups depending on the project at hand. An overarching theme in our work is a perceived conflict between “humans” and “nature”. We reveal the history and currents of contradictions related to this divide by challenging systems of exchange and the tools we use to “hunt” and “gather”. Our work is expressed through temporary public art, museum installations, public programs and publications. We often provide a playful entry point and tools for people to gain insight into deeper fields of inquiry- not only to imagine, but to participate in and initiate change in the places we live.

While At Headlands

While at the Headlands, Futurefarmers will gather as a collective to collate, edit and write content for two publications. The first, Forging a Nail: From Meteorite to Trinite, is the culminating piece of a new work produced for SITE Santa Fe’s 2014 Biennial of the America’s: Unsettled Landscapes.  And the second book, Flatbread Society, will be a process book connected to a durational public art project we have been working on since 2012 in Oslo, Norway. We will host editorial workshops and open our process to the Headlands community as a means to get feedback and share the work we have been doing for the last 3 years.
