Fiction & Poetry Reading

  6x 10 five Bay Area writers read for ten minutes each. Building 944, Eastwing

• Laurel Braitman is an historian of science currently writing about mental illness in nonhumans (from dolphins to dogs).
• Maria Finn’s current novel, written at Headlands, “Sea Legs and Fish Nets,” chronicles experiences working for an all-female commercial fishing boat in Alaska.
• Tess Taylor’s book of poetry, “The Forage House” is forthcoming from Red Hen Press.
• Emily Weinstein’s upcoming publications concern Buddhists, hippies, knives, junior high school science nerds and temporary autonomous zones.
• Erica Lorraine Scheidt writes for young people and about young people. She’ll be reading from her first novel, Uses for Boys.
• Samira Yamin is a visual artist whose work deals with the representation of the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through an interrogation of documentary war photography. Her current project is a series of short stories narrating the taking of a single photograph in Iraq.

Bi-lingual Poetry Reading

• Basque writer and poet, Kirmen Uribe, reads from “That Tiny Playful God” in Basque.  Fellow AIR writer, Erica Scheidt, will then read the poems in English. Building 944, Eastwing

Interactive Performance

• Christian Nagler’s fourth financial workout, Commodities Futures Trading, in his Market Fitness series. Highlights include oil prices and energy trading, corners, squeezes, and bear raids, and debates over the permissibility of selling “what is not with you” in Islamic law. Visitors are welcome to participate in or observe workout session. Building 944, Project Space

Participatory Installation/Volunteer Event

Emily Johnson, Research for SHORE and Body, Building 952, The Gym

• Upper inside level of Gym: Body is a participatory installation
• Lower outside level of Gym: Research for SHORE In two years, SHORE will be a multi-day performance/installation of feasting, building, dance, story, and volunteerism.  Today, you can take part in Research for SHORE by spending a few moments at the temporary volunteer station and lending a hand to benefit the important work of the Marin Headlands Native Plant Nursery. All ages welcome/No experience necessary/All supplies provided.
