Open House provides a once-in-a-season opportunity to roam the various buildings of our campus, meet current artists, view works in progress, attend performances and readings, and enjoy a housemade lunch in the Mess Hall Cafe. Members at the Inspire ($250) level and above receive complimentary lunch for two!

James Ijames presents a short clip from a staging of Moon Man Walk, his play in which a young man learns the truth about his absent father when he returns home to attend his mother’s funeral. This magical journey through space and time takes us literally to the moon and back and explores the black family in the age of Mass Incarceration.

2:30–2:50PM

Nikyatu Jusu shows an excerpt from a work-in-progress cut of a 15-minute short film, Suicide By Sunlight, which she is using as proof of concept for a larger narrative episodic series. The series is about a species of daywalking black vampires who are protected from the sun by their melanin; the short film focuses on one such character whom Jusu will further explore in the series.

3–3:20PM

Chinonye Chukwu presents A LONG WALK, a short film she wrote, produced and directed. A father humiliates his son by parading him through the neighborhood in women’s clothing in front of all the other kids on a summer day. The impact of that decision ripples through his family and best friend’s lives for years to come. This story is based on true events.

Angela Willetts presents Prepositions, a performance for video, enacting and embodying various prepositions between human and rock—upon, around, between, with, against, beneath.
