Though Eileen Star Moderbacher paints landscapes, she is not a landscape painter. She uses the outdoors mainly as a setting for urban and social issues. In her recent body of work, she has been preoccupied with placing images of articles of clothing in the cactus scenes to create a subtle disharmony with the surroundings. Unlike other recent paintings, Moderbacher's recent work contains no figures. It is a dialogue between the natural world and traces of human artifacts hidden in the thorns. Her very detailed compositions may seem too crowded with every millimeter of space activated for some, but she hopes this aspect of her work only serves to heighten the tension of the moment. Moderbacher's paintings make her think of Mozart, who was accused of having too many notes in his musical compositions.
