Kara Davis

State: California
Country: United States
Year at Headlands: 2009
Discipline: dance/performance
Program: artist in residence

Largely trained in ballet, Kara Davis has danced with a variety of companies and independent choreographers such as Margaret Jenkins Dance Company, Janice Garrett & Dancers and KUNST-STOFF. More and more, Davis is intrigued by the possibilities of improvisation, both as a dancer and choreographer, largely inspired by a recent visit to Israel where she studied “gaga,” an improvisational approach to dance developed by Ohad Naharin. In her own words, “I am drawn to improvisation because I feel this modality of dancing most accurately represents the terrain of any human life.” As a chorographer, Davis is currently exploring how conflict and peace, experienced both individually and collectively, can be embodied through dance. She plans to investigate the possibilities of improvisational dance during her time in residence at Headlands. Davis received an Isadora Duncan Award in 2003 for "Outstanding Achievement in Individual Performance." She holds a BA from St. Mary’s College.
